A customer sent a valuable, insured mobile phone by courier on a "self-collection" basis, meaning the parcel should be handed over only to the named receiver. The courier gave it to an impostor without checking identity. The impostor later admitted the fraud and the phone came back. Even so, the consumer court awarded compensation for the faulty service, and the Lahore High Court upheld it. It held that "self-collection" means the courier must verify the receiver's identity strictly, especially for valuable, insured parcels. The sender being a little careless does not excuse the company, and getting the phone back later does not erase the harm. Delay, worry and inconvenience are enough for compensation. Lesson: service providers must follow proper verification, and customers can claim compensation.
