What is free legal aid (pro bono) in Pakistan?

Pro bono means legal services a lawyer provides to someone in need without any fee. SJP is Pakistan's largest online lawyers directory, with 1,944 verified lawyers across 204 cities and 30 areas of law. Applications from people who cannot afford a lawyer are put in front of those lawyers who volunteer to take a case without charging for it.

Which cases can qualify for free legal aid?

Criminal matters, especially where the accused is in police or judicial custody
Juvenile and child matters — whether the child is accused or a victim
Prisoners who cannot afford legal representation
Indigent or vulnerable women in family matters — divorce, khula, maintenance, dower, dowry, child custody
Other clearly indigent or vulnerable people within a recognised legal-aid category

Which cases usually do not qualify?

Commercial or business disputes — partnership, company, commercial contracts, recovery
Ordinary civil or property disputes — ownership, land, possession, inheritance, partition, rent
Applicants who can afford to pay a private lawyer

Poverty alone does not make a civil or property matter eligible. The legal nature of the case is assessed first, and only then the applicant's finances.

Frequently asked questions

Is the lawyer really free?

Yes. A lawyer who accepts your pro bono case signs an undertaking that they will charge you no advocacy fee, no consultation fee and no other legal-services fee. If anyone asks you for a fee, tell us.

Then what is the 99 PKR for?

The 99 PKR is an application processing fee only. It is not a lawyer's fee and none of it goes to the lawyer. It exists so that only genuine applications are received.

Am I guaranteed a lawyer?

No. Every application is assessed, and eligible cases are put in front of verified lawyers — but free legal assistance can never be guaranteed.

Is the photo of my CNIC stored?

No. The image is read once to extract the number and name, then discarded in the same request. It is never written to our servers or anywhere else.

How will I know if my application was accepted?

When a lawyer accepts your case you receive an email with their name, city and contact number, and the lawyer contacts you on the same WhatsApp number.

Can I submit more than one application?

No. One application per CNIC and per WhatsApp number.
